VIDEO // Germany reaffirms support for Moldova's European and ecological path

Germany reaffirms its commitment to the Republic of Moldova, supporting both the country's European integration and its transition to a sustainable development model. The statement was made today during a joint press conference held by Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu and his German counterpart, Carsten Schneider, who is on an official visit to Chisinau.

The two officials discussed the deepening of bilateral cooperation in the environmental protection and evaluated the progress made through joint projects. They also approached efficient waste management, energy efficiency, modernization of water and sewer infrastructure and adaptation to climate change.

“Germany is a strategic partner of the Republic of Moldova. The projects carried out together directly contribute to improving the quality of life of our citizens and moving closer to European standards. The support of German partners has made possible the energy modernization of dozens of public buildings and the extension of access to drinking water in several localities, including Falesti, Calarasi, and Cahul,” said Sergiu Lazarencu.

Carsten Schneider praised Chisinau's efforts in implementing environmental reforms and emphasized Germany's openness to continue supporting Moldova.

“The progress made is remarkable. Moldova can count on Germany on its way towards a united and sustainable Europe. Adhering to EU standards is not only a political step but also a gain for the health and welfare of citizens,” said the German official.

The strategic partnerships between Moldova and German institutions such as the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) were presented as examples of efficient cooperation. The implemented projects target not just infrastructure and legislation, but also the strengthening of institutional capacities, according to Carsten Schneider.

Officials also announced new areas of collaboration in fields such as the circular economy, biodiversity conservation, and reforestation. The Moldovan minister reiterated the goal of increasing the country's forested area from 11% to 15%, in line with European environmental commitments.

Schneider's visit marks a new step in strengthening Moldovan-German relations and confirms Berlin's constant support for a European and ecological future for the Republic of Moldova.

Through GIZ and KfW, the Republic of Moldova and Germany are implementing a series of key projects in ecology, water infrastructure and energy efficiency. The most important recent initiatives include the modernization of water and sewer networks in Central Moldova; regional water and sewer system in Cahul district; PROGRESS Program – Preparing Moldova for the European Green Deal; energy modernization of public buildings; green logistics initiatives and transport digitalization, among others.
