Parliamentary Elections 2025 // Increased interest in polls on behalf of independent candidates in Moldova: eleven contenders have already submitted documents

Two political parties and eleven independent candidates have so far submitted documents for participation in the regular parliamentary elections, due on September 28, according to the president of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Angelica Caraman.

“As of now, the situation is as follows: two political parties have submitted their candidate lists. In one case, the resubmission occurred because the initial registration was rejected, because of not meeting the minimum requirements as to the set of documents,” Caraman said in an interview given exclusively with MOLDPRES.

As for the independent candidates, Angelica Caraman noted an increased interest compared to previous elections.

“We have eleven independent applicants — which is, I could say, a first. It's the first time that there is such a high level of interest on behalf of independent candidates,” the CEC head noted.

According to procedures, initiative groups have already been created for two of them, and the electoral authority has issued them credentials and subscription lists. Those who submit documents individually also receive lists for collecting the necessary signatures to support their candidacy.

Angelica Caraman referred to electoral thresholds stipulated by legislation: an electoral bloc must get 7 per cent of the votes to enter parliament, a political party – 5 per cent and an independent candidate – 2 per cent.

“At the previous parliamentary elections, no independent candidate managed to enter parliament,” the CEC chairwoman emphasized. She encouraged all participants to observe the rules and legal deadlines in the registration process.

On September 28, 2025, regular parliamentary elections will be held in Moldova. The election is organized to elect the new composition of Moldova’s parliament for a four-year term.
