EU invests over 17 million lei in urban revitalization of five cities in Moldova
Five urban revitalization projects in the cities of Rîșcani, Nisporeni, Ceadîr-Lunga, Cimișlia and Hîncești are funded with over 17 million lei from European funds. The investments are made within the initiative EU4Moldova Resilience: secure state, resilient communities, implemented by Solidarity Fund PL in Moldova. The aim is to modernize local infrastructure, ranging from water drainage systems and energy-efficient kindergartens to public spaces and sports grounds.
In Rîșcani, the dam of the reservoir is being reconstructed for the first time in over five decades. The project involves modernizing the water drainage system and strengthening the dam's structure to reduce the risk of flooding and protect the area's infrastructure. The work started in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by September.
"Currently, we have no control over the water level, which poses real risks to nearby houses and negatively impacts local biodiversity. This project will allow us to manage water resources and offer more safety to the city's residents," Rîșcani mayor Victor Bogatico said.
In Nisporeni, the project aims to modernize access to the District Hospital and Health Center by constructing a modern parking lot of 3200 m² with 105 spaces. Additionally, adjacent green spaces will be arranged. Local authorities claim that the initiative will streamline traffic in the area and reduce ambulance intervention times, thereby improving access to medical services for the entire community.
The city of Cimișlia benefits from the construction of two multifunctional sports grounds for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. These will be equipped with accessible stands, including for people with special needs. Families in the area, schools, kindergartens, cultural centers, libraries, and other local institutions will benefit from the new sports infrastructure."We have two male and two female volleyball teams that until now only had access to the school gym. With the new outdoor fields, they will be able to conduct training and competitions year-round," stated the city's mayor.
In Hîncești, Albinuța kindergarten is completely renovated to offer a safe and energy-efficient environment. Walls and floors are insulated, the roof is replaced, and the heating system is modernized, while the entire outdoor area is rehabilitated. The project is valued at over 3.8 million lei. With the start of the new educational year, Albinuța kindergarten in Hîncești will be a safer, more comfortable, and energy-efficient space for the 160 children attending it.
The kindergarten in Ceadîr-Lunga is also being rehabilitated for energy efficiency through building thermal insulation, installation of solar panels with a capacity of 30 kW, and a complete modernization of the area."These investments directly contribute to improving the quality of life in our communities—whether it's about critical infrastructure, access to medical services, or modern educational spaces. We are glad that, with the support of the European Union, we are transforming cities into safer and more friendly places for citizens," said project manager Nicolae Soloviov.
Beneficiary cities were selected following a public grant call conducted in 2024 by Solidarity Fund PL in Moldova.
