Moldovan president, EU Commissioner for Justice discuss accelerating justice reforms

President Maia Sandu today met European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath, on a visit to Chisinau.

The meeting focused on the steps already taken in the reform process and the next stages. In the context, the head of state highlighted the commitment of the competent institutions to accelerate efforts, in order to meet the interim benchmarks under Chapter 23 – Judiciary and Fundamental Rights and Chapter 24 – Justice, Freedom and Security.

The two officials also reviewed progress in the external evaluation of judges and prosecutors, as well as actions aimed at strengthening justice sector institutions, reducing staff shortages and improving the quality of professional training.

The sides also addressed the need to boost efforts to combat corruption, which is essential for strengthening public trust and advancing Moldova’s European path. The Moldovan president expressed appreciation for the constant support provided by the European Union in the process of building a functional rule-of-law state in the country, in which citizens can trust that the law is applied equally to everyone.
