Moldovan PM has discussions with European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law
March 27, 2026, Chisinau – The progress and current challenges in the judicial system of Moldova have been discussed by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, Michael McGrath. The talks focused on mechanisms for cleansing the system, protecting the information space and strengthening the country’s European path.
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu reiterated the government’s firm commitment to continue the vetting process (external integrity assessment of prosecutors), emphasizing that it stays the central pillar for restoring citizens’ trust in the act of justice. An independent, reliable and robust judiciary is fundamental both for advancing of Moldova in the process of accession to the European Union and for strengthening citizens’ confidence in fair justice.
The officials discussed the fight against disinformation and the need for clear mechanisms at European level to protect democracy without restricting freedom of expression. Commissioner Michael McGrath highlighted Moldova as a positive example in the region for its resilience in the face of hybrid attacks and reconfirmed that the EU would continue to provide technical and financial assistance to support these modernization efforts.
European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath is paying an official visit to Chisinau on March 26–27. The official is holding meetings at governmental and legislative level with representatives of key institutions in the justice sector and civil society, as well as with members of the vetting commissions.
