Strengthening Moldova’s cooperation with UNDP, UNOPS discussed in New York

Development cooperation, strengthening the resilience of Moldova and the effective implementation of projects supported by international partners have been discussed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan at meetings with Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Alexander De Croo and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Jorge Moreira da Silva. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York.

During the meeting with the UNDP Administrator, the PM appreciated the constant support provided to Moldova, including assistance in managing the energy and refugee crises, as well as in modernizing institutions, advancing digital transformation, strengthening social protection, promoting local development, increasing economic competitiveness and reinforcing social cohesion.

A separate topic of discussion was energy security and support for vulnerable households. The Moldovan prime minister thanked UNDP for its significant contribution, in recent years, to managing the energy crisis, including through the administration of the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund, and emphasized the need to continue this cooperation in the 2026–2027 cold season.

During the discussion with UNOPS Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva, Vasile Tofan addressed projects carried out in Moldova and the need for their efficient, transparent, and accountable implementation. Particular attention was paid to the project concerning the construction of the new penitentiary in Chisinau and the rapid identification of a solution to continue the project.

The meetings reaffirmed the importance of Moldova’s cooperation with organizations of the United Nations system in strengthening institutions, enhancing the country’s resilience and implementing development projects that deliver concrete results for citizens.
