Prime Minister Vasile Tofan in New York has met representatives of the Moldovan Diaspora from the United States. The discussions focused on energy security, the possibility of returning home and investment opportunities in Moldova. The meeting with Moldovan citizens settled in the United States was part of the prime minister’s agenda during his visit to New York, where he is attending the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Vasile Tofan said that the discussion with Diaspora members had focused particularly on the issues concerning them in relation to the situation in the country.

“Last night, in New York, I met members of our Diaspora in the United States. Wonderful, curious people who are very well informed about what is happening back home. I left with more energy than I arrived with,” the prime minister wrote.

According to him, one of the main topics discussed was energy security and the impact of tariffs on the population.

“We talked about what concerns them most: the country’s energy security, the possibility of returning and the opportunities Moldova offers. High energy tariffs are weighing on every family, which is why, the government is working to find cheaper gas and reduce the pressure on people,” Vasile Tofan said.

Energy security is one of the topics on the prime minister’s agenda during his visit to the United States. In talks held in New York with officials and business representatives, Tofan also addressed the need to strengthen the energy resilience of Moldova.

Another topic discussed with the Diaspora was the economy and how the state can create better conditions for citizens and the business community.

“We also discussed the economy: the sectors with the greatest potential, how we can make the state more citizen-friendly, more welcoming to entrepreneurs and more attractive to investors looking toward Moldova,” the prime minister said.

Vasile Tofan urged Moldovans living abroad to consider returning home and contributing to the development of the economy through projects and investments.

“Finally, I told our compatriots the following: come home with investment projects and the government will be your partner. Moldova needs you—not only the money you send to your families, but also the experience, connections and ideas you have gathered far from home,” Vasile Tofan said.

Attracting investments and involving the Diaspora in the economic development of Moldova are also on the official agenda of the prime minister’s visit to New York. The government said that talks with representatives of the US business community would also focus on promoting the investment opportunities provided by Moldova.

Vasile Tofan is in New York on September 23-26, where he is attending the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. On September 26, the prime minister is scheduled to deliver a speech before the General Assembly.
