Judicial reform, rule of law in focus of discussions between Moldovan president, new Head of Council of Europe Office

President Maia Sandu today discussed with new Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau Natalia Voutova, the organization’s support for judicial reform and the strengthening of the rule of law. The head of state reaffirmed the Moldovan authorities’ commitment to continuing the reforms needed to modernize the country, expected by citizens and essential for joining the European Union.

One topic of discussion was the implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Moldova 2025–2028, through which the organization supports reforms in the judiciary, the fight against corruption and the protection of human rights. In this context, the president highlighted the cooperation with the Venice Commission and the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO).

The interlocutors also discussed the results of Moldova’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. They include the agreement on the Management Committee of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. In addition, at the ministerial session held in Chisinau in last May, member states ruled to prepare negotiations on a legal instrument concerning information manipulation and foreign interference.

The head of state wished Natalia Voutova success in carrying out her new mandate and reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to continuing its cooperation with the Council of Europe.
