Moldovan acting premier visits dam of lake from nearby Chisinau
Chisinau, 9 December /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega today paid a fact-collecting visit to the protection dam of the reservoir Ghidighici, central Straseni district, given a note by the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) on floods which might occur because of the bad state of the construction, the government's communication and media relations department has reported.
The acting prime minister was accompanied by representatives of the Interior Ministry, Environment Ministry, Regional Development and Constructions Ministry, "Apele Moldovei" (Moldova's waters) Agency and local public administration.
Gheorghe Brega inspected the hydrotechnical construction, and took knowledge of the present state of the protection dam. Rapporteurs said that the system of sluices was presently in a relatively good state and was able to prevent the risk of floods, just only the dam needed to be consolidated.
The acting prime minister stressed the strategic importance of the inspected unit, adding that he would propose to discuss the subject within the Supreme Security Council. "We will discuss on the dam's guarding by competent institutions, such as the army or specialised structure," Gheorghe Brega said.
The acting prime minister told journalists that, after the lake switched to the management of Apele Moldovei Agency, and the starting of works to consolidate the dam, the danger of floods was low. "To start the construction's consolidation works, 2.6 million lei has been earmarked," Gheorghe Brega added.
The Ghidighici lake's dam was built in 1963 and holds back the water of a largest Moldovan lake, with an area of 740 hectares. If the dam is damaged or destroyed, there is a risk of floods in the Chisinau municipality and the central Anenii Noi district.
