Moldovan PM has meeting with representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Moldova
Chisinau, 16 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Dorin Recean today met a new representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Moldova, Anne-Marie Deutschlander. The officials discussed the social integration of the Ukrainian refugees who had ruled to remain in Moldova, as well as the importance of maintaining the capacity of preparation and response to emergencies on behalf of the state, the government’s communication department has reported.
The PM appreciated the contribution of the UN agency to the development of efficient instruments for the protection of the people who had fled the war in Ukraine. Recean noted that, also at present, the authorities stayed focused on the continuation of the humanitarian programmes, facilitation of refugees’ employment and backing the integration of the children refugees in the education system.
Another concern, according to the PM, deals with the potential humanitarian crisis on the lefty bank of Dniester, if Russia ceases the deliveries of gas to the region. This crisis would hit about 300,000 Moldovan citizens from the Transnistrian region, who run the risk of remaining without gas, electricity, as well as without enough money to purchase the basic products.
In this respect, Anne-Marie Deutschlander expressed the openness of the United States Agency to support the government in consolidating the mechanisms of citizens’ social protection and successful management of the challenges faced, if a humanitarian crisis starts. Also, Anne-Marie Deutschlander emphasized that UNHCR would provide, also in continuation, the needed support to the Ukrainian refugees from Moldova, including through the development of new programmes and support actions.
