President Maia Sandu today participated, together with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset, in a conference titled, Roma and the Future of Work: A Social Rights Perspective,” during which she referred to the challenges and progress made in the field of inclusion of the Roma community.

The head of state noted that discrimination against Roma stayed a widespread problem in many European states, including Moldova, a fact also confirmed by the 2025 report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. In the context, the Moldovan president highlighted the need for concrete and better-targeted actions for the integration of Roma into the labor market, as well as measures dedicated to young people and support for entrepreneurship. She also underlined that the green and digital transition must be inclusive, and that all citizens, regardless of origin, should be able to enjoy the benefits of the European integration.

“The inclusion of Roma people should not be seen as a problem to be solved, but as an obligation related to respecting human dignity. At the same time, it is an opportunity to harness the potential of each Roma person, for the common good of the whole society,” the president noted.

The head of state also stressed the importance of promoting Roma culture, in order to combat prejudice, recalling the organization, for the second consecutive year, of Roma Week in educational institutions across the country.

In conclusion, the Moldovan president expressed confidence that the discussions held at the conference would help identify effective solutions for building a more equitable society, in which Roma people are and feel respected.
