Chisinau and Bucharest deepen joint infrastructure and energy projects

The Republic of Moldova and Romania will continue their joint infrastructure and energy projects, while cooperation between the two countries will contribute to strengthening regional security and resilience. The issues were discussed by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi with the President of the Senate of Romania, Mircea Abrudean, during a meeting in Bucharest.

The discussions focused on bilateral relations, Romania’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s European path, interparliamentary cooperation, and the reforms needed to advance the EU accession process.

Mihai Popșoi appreciated Bucharest’s active support for the Republic of Moldova’s European integration process, including in its relations with European institutions and the capitals of member states. The official noted that the European Union’s enlargement report confirms the progress made by the country over the past 12 months across all negotiating chapters, with the Republic of Moldova ready to open the final two clusters.

For his part, Mircea Abrudean reaffirmed Romania’s unconditional support for the Republic of Moldova and welcomed the reforms promoted by the authorities in Chisinau, as well as efforts to strengthen resilience in the face of hybrid threats.

“The Republic of Moldova is maintaining the proposed timetable in the process of joining the European Union. We are also making progress on major energy interconnection and road infrastructure projects. Good cooperation between our countries makes us stronger, and together we are a shield against threats in the region and an example of Europe’s resilience,” said the President of the Senate of Romania.

Another topic addressed during the meeting was the overflight of drones through the airspace of the Republic of Moldova and Romania, in the context of the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The officials discussed the risks to citizens’ safety and the need for a coordinated response at the regional level.

The two officials reaffirmed the importance of continuing dialogue and cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, for the benefit of the citizens of both countries and regional security.

Popșoi is visiting Bucharest, Romania, on November 5–6. The official will participate in the annual meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Central European Initiative.
