President at Noroc band concert: It kept Romanian language and dignity of generation that won independence alive
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu attended the anniversary concert of Noroc band, marking 60 years since its founding. The head of state highlighted the role the group played in promoting Romanian-language music during the Soviet period and its contribution to preserving national identity.
In a message published after the event, Maia Sandu recalled that the band was founded in 1966 by Mihai Dolgan, at a time when performing songs in Romanian, accompanied by electric guitars and featuring lyrics about longing, love, and freedom, represented an act of courage.
“The band was banned by the Soviet authorities, but its songs kept alive the language and the dignity of an entire generation — the one that, in 1989–1991, took to the Great National Assembly Square and won its independence,” the president said.
Maia Sandu said that together with the audience present in the hall, she listened to the songs that accompanied the childhood and youth of several generations.
Noroc band, one of the best-known musical groups in the Republic of Moldova, is marking six decades since its founding. Created by composer Mihai Dolgan, the band won over generations of music lovers with songs that became hits, weathered difficult periods, and contributed to the rise of renowned performers. Sixty years after its creation, the band’s music continues to be appreciated by audiences at home and abroad.
