Moldovan foreign affairs minister rejects claims by Russia’s Ambassador-Designate

Moldova is a peaceful state that places great importance on its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The fact that Moldova is a neutral state does not mean that it should not invest in defense. Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi has made statements to this effect, who rejected claims by Russia’s Ambassador-Designate to Chisinau Oleg Ozerov, that the West is arming and preparing Moldova for a confrontation with the Russian Federation.

According to Moldova’s foreign affairs minister, a neutral state that does not benefit from the support of partners within a defense alliance must invest much more in its own defense.

“These investments are purely defensive and are strictly aimed at enabling the country to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The concerned diplomat is probably judging from the perspective of his own country. Moldova is a peaceful state and any insinuations to the contrary are inappropriate, regrettable and condemnable,” Mihai Popsoi said.

In an interview with Russian media, Russia’s Ambassador-Designate to Moldova Oleg Ozerov said that Western countries were arming Moldova and preparing it for a possible confrontation with Russia, following the Ukrainian model. The diplomat also claimed that the Moldovan authorities were pursuing a policy of “accelerated militarization” in the interests of Western countries.
