DOC European integration set out in Constitution
Chisinau, Nov 4 /MOLDPRES/- The Constitutional Court's decision on the confirmation of the results of the October 20, 2024 republican constitutional referendum was published in the Official Journal and entered into force. Thus, the Constitution of the country will be filled with a new title: INTEGRATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION.
According to the document, the preamble of the supreme law will be supplemented with two new paragraphs with the following wording: "RECOGNIZING the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European path of the Republic of Moldova. DECLARING integration into the European Union as a strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova".
Title V - INTEGRATION INTO THE EUROPEAN UNION will be set out and will read as follows: Accession to the constituent Treaties and acts revising the constituent Treaties of the European Union:
(1) The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the constituent Treaties of the European Union, as well as to the acts revising the constituent Treaties of the European Union, shall be determined by the Parliament by organic law.
(2) As a result of accession, the provisions of the constituent treaties of the European Union, as well as the other binding legal acts of the European Union shall take precedence over contrary provisions of domestic laws, subject to the provisions of the act of accession."
On October 31, the Constitutional Court judges confirmed the results of the October 20 republican constitutional referendum. The decision was handed down by Court's President Domnica Manole, after several hours of deliberations. She noted that there were also two separate opinions by magistrates Sergiu Turcan and Vladimir Turcan.
The October 20 referendum had a turnout of 50.72%. Thus, 1,532,264 voters received ballot papers for the referendum and 1,531,392 participated in the vote. Out of the total number of 1,488,874 valid votes cast, 749,719 people voted for the YES option and 739,155 people voted for the NO option. In the plebiscite, the citizens answered the question "Do you agree with amending the Constitution for Moldova's accession to the European Union?".
The republican constitutional referendum was organized on the initiative of Moldova's President Maia Sandu. The initiative to revise the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova was signed by 46 MPs and approved by the Constitutional Court.
