MEP: Moldova to be priority in European Union's budget for next seven years
The Republic of Moldova will be a priority in the European Union's budget for the next seven years. Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the Republic of Moldova Siegfried Mureșan made the statement today.
After the largest European support in the country's history was voted last month, amounting to 1.9 billion euros, MEPs continue to support the Republic of Moldova on its path to the EU.
“That is why, in my report on the European Union's budgetary priorities for 2028 – 2034, I included a provision for the Republic of Moldova, alongside Ukraine, to receive financial and political support in the EU accession process,” Mureșan said.
He said that the report on the European Union's budgetary priorities was voted today with broad support in the committee on budgets.
“We want the EU budget for 2028 – 2032 to be sufficiently flexible so that we are prepared to support the Republic of Moldova both with pre-accession funds and as a full-fledged member state, in case accession occurs within this timeframe. By the accession of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and other states that will meet the conditions, the European Union will strengthen as a geopolitical power in the face of new security challenges we are facing. That is why the enlargement of the European Union and support for candidate countries should be priorities in the future European budget,” Mureșan concluded.
A month ago, the European Parliament and EU member states agreed on a support plan for the Republic of Moldova amounting to 1.9 billion euros. The negotiators agreed on allocating 520 million euros in grants, along with 1.5 billion euros in low-interest loans.
