Moldova's designated PM discusses local public administration reform with local authorities

Designated Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today held consultations with representatives of local public administration, during which the sides analyzed aspects of the local public administration reform and visions for community development. The official advocated for identifying solutions grounded in on-the-ground realities and that truly work in everyday life, without wasting time on delays or blockages.

Vasile Tofan underscored the need for well-argued debates and the identification of effective solutions.

“We had an open discussion today with representatives of level I and II local public administration about our communities and the local public administration reform. How the level I structure should look – the organization of mayoralties, local financing, self-management; what the role of the level II administration – district councils – is in a small country like Moldova – these are complex questions, and opinions are divided, and it is good to have debates,” said the designated candidate for the position of prime minister.

At the same time, Vasile Tofan noted that many localities had already advanced in the process of voluntary amalgamation and had begun to cooperate and mayors want to have the resources and capacity to develop their localities. Under these conditions, according to him, the right solution is not “to demolish what has been built, but to come up with solutions grounded in on-the-ground realities.”

“I thank the representatives of CALM (Congress of Local Authorities from Moldova), CALE and the Union of District Councils for their strong involvement. Only in this way, can we generate solutions that truly work in everyday life, not just on paper. Many localities have already advanced in the process of voluntary amalgamation and have started to cooperate. Mayors want to have the resources and capacity to develop their localities. The right solution is not to demolish what has been built, but to come up with solutions grounded in on-the-ground realities, especially since we are already in July and we cannot afford to waste time on delays or blockages,” concluded Vasile Tofan.

President Maia Sandu on July 11 designated Vasile Tofan as candidate for the position of Prime Minister of Moldova. According to Moldova's Constitution, the designated candidate must, within 15 days, request a vote of confidence from parliament for the government’s activity programme and its composition.

As part of the process of drafting the governing programme and forming the future cabinet, Vasile Tofan held discussions with all 16 acting ministers. Subsequently, the designated PM took part in consultations with representatives of the business community.
