Vasile Tofan announces priorities of new Government – EU integration, economic recovery and restoring citizens’ trust
Designated candidate for the position of prime minister, Vasile Tofan, presented the main priorities of the Government he will lead, emphasizing his determination to ensure political stability and to serve his full term. Among the strategic pillars he announced are: restoring citizens’ trust through bold reforms, restarting the economy by directly supporting local entrepreneurs, and consolidating an honest team in public administration, the main objective being to seize “this generation’s opportunity” for the country’s integration into the EU.
Vasile Tofan mentioned that, together with his team, he will apply all the knowledge they have to improve citizens’ lives. Thus, the first objective he announced aims at restoring and strengthening trust.
“I know how Moldovans feel, because the last few weeks have been difficult. Many people are disappointed. I want to assure you that I also hear these things; my parents, my relatives and my neighbors hear them too. I will focus heavily on restoring this trust and I understand that it can be regained only through courage: through interventions, through change, through reforms and by taking on difficult decisions,” Vasile Tofan remarked.
He stressed that citizens’ lives can only be improved by restarting the country’s economy.
“The economy is not built in ministries or in bureaucrats’ offices. The economy is built on the ground, in the small farm, in the factory and in the IT park. That is why, from the very first days, I will focus on restoring and boosting entrepreneurs’ optimism, starting first and foremost with local entrepreneurs. The currency of entrepreneurs is optimism. We must bring back this optimism so that the spark returns to people’s eyes and they want to invest, to take risks and to develop projects in the Republic of Moldova,” Vasile Tofan specified.
The candidate for prime minister called on public servants to build a strong team in order to bring the Republic of Moldova into the European Union as soon as possible.
“Politics, governance and the business environment are all team sports. You cannot achieve anything alone. I know that many of you may be worried, including because of some of my statements that were not sufficiently well understood. But I want to send a clear message: I am a team player and I am coming to build together a strong team. All those who share our values, all those who are honest, courageous, competent and hard‑working must know that they will always have an ally in me. Everything we do is to improve Moldovans’ lives and to bring the Republic of Moldova into the European Union as soon as possible. We have a lot of work to do in this direction. This is our generation’s opportunity, and I very much want us to succeed together,” Vasile Tofan concluded.
Vasile Tofan also added that the Republic of Moldova needs stability and can no longer afford repeated changes at the helm of the Government.
“I fully intend to remain in this position for more than eight months, including because we cannot afford experiments and to stumble so many times. Therefore, I fully intend to serve my term to the end,” he underlined.
Vasile Tofan also aims to have a communication style different from that practiced by politicians.
“I will try to communicate in a transparent and direct manner. I will not speak like a politician. I will be a person who tells things as they are, who communicates directly and transparently. I will put my finger on the wound even when it hurts. I believe that only in this way can we move forward,” the candidate stated.
President Maia Sandu today designated Vasile Tofan as candidate for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, the designated candidate must, within 15 days, request a vote of confidence from Parliament for the Government’s activity program and its composition.
