Perspectives on Moldova's European integration: experts says joint declaration announced today by officials from seven states good political signal

The joint declaration announced today by officials from seven Baltic states (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia), Nordic states (Sweden, Finland), as well as from Poland and Germany, representing over 145 million Europeans, is a good political signal and shows that the future of Moldova is being built in the European Union, says Daniel Voda, associate expert at the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE).

According to the cited source, this declaration confirms that Moldova is advancing on the path of integration, with reforms requested by citizens and with concrete support from the EU, including disbursements from the Growth Plan worth 1.9 billion euros for development and modernization.

“In a complicated regional context, marked by pressure, by the war of aggression against Ukraine and by the cognitive war against Moldova, European partners reconfirm that Moldovans matter for Europe’s security and stability. I consider that getting this political support is an achievement of the parliamentary commission for European integration and implies accelerating reforms, political unity between parliamentary and extra-parliamentary parties and concrete results for the people,” the cited source said.

According to Voda, the European Union offers the opportunity, but it is the mission of Moldova to turn it into reality.

Today, in Chisinau, a declaration was signed by representatives of the parliaments of seven EU member states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Germany), calling for the acceleration of Moldova’s EU accession negotiations.

The document was signed by the head of the commission for European integration, Marcel Spatari, together with representatives of the European affairs committees of these states’ parliaments.

“It is a declaration that calls on the member states and the European Union to take the necessary measures to open formal negotiations for Moldova’s accession to the European Union on all clusters, so that the accession process can continue and be accelerated in the coming period, in order to maintain the momentum we have recorded recently,” said Marcel Spatari at the closing conference of the official visit.

The declaration reaffirms strong support for the European path of Moldova and welcomes the progress made by the Moldovan authorities in the process of reforms and consolidation of democratic institutions, in the context of external pressures and security challenges.

The signatories also stressed that accession negotiations must be opened without delay and encouraged EU member states to adopt the necessary decisions in this regard, both for Moldova and for Ukraine.

According to the declaration, the European Union’s enlargement process must be merit-based, predictable and credible and the integration of Moldova would contribute to strengthening security, stability and prosperity in the region.

The European officials also reiterated their readiness to continue supporting  Moldova, including through parliamentary cooperation and exchange of experience, in order to support the reforms needed for European integration.

The signing of the declaration was also welcomed by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, with whom the European parliamentarians had a meeting after the document had been signed.

“The support and experience of these states are important for us. European integration is the firm choice of our citizens, expressed at the elections, and represents a country project for peace, development and a secure future at home,” Grosu concluded.

The representatives of the European affairs committees from the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Germany are paying a joint visit to Moldova on March 29-31, 2026, at an invitation by the head commission for European integration, Marcel Spatari.
