Moldovan PM says appointment of Eugeniu Osmochescu to Agriculture to allow government to bring more economic logic to such an important field

The nomination of Eugeniu Osmochescu as Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry will allow us to bring more economic logic to such an important field. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has made statements to this effect, who thus justified the need for the changes announced in the composition of the government today.

The PM emphasized that the decision aims to introduce a more strongly economically oriented approach to the management of the sector, in view of accessing European funds that will become available to Moldova.

“In the case of the Agriculture Minister, Mr. Eugeniu Osmochescu, I believe this is a decision that will allow us to bring more economic logic to such an important field. I think it is good to have an economist at Agriculture. The challenges are very significant, but the funds that will flow into agriculture after Moldova’s accession to the European Union, and our access to the Common Agricultural Policy funds starting from 2028, will require much more economic prudence. That is why, we considered it important to have in Agriculture a tested economist who already understands how the government’s machinery works,” said Vasile Tofan at the show “Pe față” (Openly) at the public television channel Moldova 1.

The prime minister added that the main goal of the new minister would be to direct subsidies towards the areas where they can produce the greatest impact and to implement the reforms considered necessary in the agricultural sector.

“My opinion has been that, at this stage, Mr. Osmochescu’s energy and qualities will serve us best in agriculture, because we are facing many challenges there and we cannot afford mistakes. We have no room for experiments there. That is why we set out to choose a person in whom we have full confidence, who has the necessary capabilities and the courage to carry out the needed reforms in agriculture. So that the limited subsidy funds are directed where they will have the greatest impact,” Vasile Tofan underlined.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today announced two changes in the composition of the Government: Eugeniu Osmochescu has been proposed as Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry and Claudiu Nasui as Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, a position currently held by Osmochescu.
