Moldovan president condemns launch by Russia of Oreshnik missile on Ukraine

President Maia Sandu has condemned the launch by Russia of the Oreshnik ballistic missile in its attacks on Ukraine. In her message, the head of state noted that “this act of terror aims to intimidate Ukraine and its partners.”

“We firmly condemn the launch by Russia of an Oreshnik missile against Ukraine, which struck energy infrastructure and civilian housing. This act of terror aims to intimidate Ukraine and its partners. This war is approaching Europe and poses a danger to all of us. We stand united with Ukraine,” Maia Sandu wrote on the X platform.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu also issued a statement today firmly condemning Russia’s launch of the Oreshnik missile.

The Russian army launched 36 missiles and 242 drones against Ukraine during the night of January 8 to 9, the Ukrainian Air Force said today. The massive attack included a hypersonic Oreshnik missile, which was launched at the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, near the border with Poland. This is the second time Russia has used this type of missile in the war it is waging in Ukraine.

“Such an attack, carried out near the border of the European Union and NATO, represents a serious threat to the security of the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on the X platform.

Russia’s massive bombardments last night left at least four people dead in Kyiv and dozens injured.

The Oreshnik missile, capable of striking targets thousands of kilometers away with nuclear warheads, was used for the first time with a conventional payload in November 2024 against the city of Dnipro in central-eastern Ukraine.
