New local elections to be held in two settlements of Moldova, referendum on mayor's dismissal

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC), at a today’s meeting, set 17 May 2026 as the date for holding new local elections for the position of mayor in the village of Plop, northern Donduseni district, and the commune of Frumusica, northern Floresti district, as well as for holding a local referendum on the dismissal of the mayor of the village of Hasnasenii Mari, northern Drochia district.

According to the CEC, the decisions follow the death of the mayor of the village of Plop, Donduseni district, and the notification of the Soroca Territorial Office of the State Chancellery, which found the early termination by law of the mandate of the mayor of the commune of Frumusica, Floresti district, due to the impossibility of exercising the office for a period of five consecutive months as a result of the extension of the mayor’s pre-trial detention.

At the same time, the CEC confirmed that the necessary number of signatures collected by the initiative group to hold the local referendum on the dismissal of the mayor of the village of Hasnasenii Mari, Drochia district, had been met, and set the date of 17 May 2026 for the ballot.

On 17 May 2026, new local elections will also be held in the village of Costesti and the commune of Rusestii Noi, central Ialoveni district, the village of Mascauti, central Criuleni district, the commune of Saratenii Vechi, central Telenesti district, the town of Taraclia, Taraclia district, the municipality of Orhei, Orhei district, the village of Topala, southern Cimislia district, and the village of Copceac, Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia.
