Prime Minister at The Economist conference on accelerating EU accession process: Moldova moves forward despite challenges

Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu reaffirmed the Government’s firm commitment to accelerating the process of accession to the European Union, stressing that this objective has become a strategic certainty. The statements were made today at Romania Government Roundtable conference, an event organized by The Economist, where he presented Moldova’s progress and challenges in the current regional context.

In his message, the Prime Minister emphasized that the Republic of Moldova is “building Europe at home” through tangible results, despite an external climate marked by deep crises. Munteanu underlined that the country’s European path is no longer a hypothesis, but a matter of speed of implementation.

The Prime Minister listed a series of major obstacles the country is facing, generated mainly by conflicts in the neighborhood. Among these are systematic attacks on the region’s energy infrastructure, which put pressure on the national system; pollution of the Dniester River, a vital resource for the population; external attempts to destabilize internal democratic processes; rising fuel costs; and increasingly difficult logistics.

“Moldova moves forward despite these challenges. Accelerating the accession process is our firm commitment and an important factor of stability for the entire region,” Munteanu said.

The official stressed that the government agenda remains focused on modernizing the state and creating an attractive economic environment. The Republic of Moldova relies on the digitalization of public services and the reduction of bureaucracy in order to offer predictability to foreign investors.

On the social front, the Executive’s priorities target investments in critical infrastructure, such as access to drinking water, energy security, and improving the quality of medical services. These directions are considered essential pillars for aligning living standards in Moldova with those in the EU.

The Prime Minister’s participation in the roundtable organized by The Economist highlights Moldova’s openness to international dialogue and its determination to attract support for its integration path, at a crucial moment for the stability of South-Eastern Europe.

Munteanu will pay an official visit to Bucharest, Romania, on 31 March 2026. During the visit, the Prime Minister will take part in Romania Government Roundtable Conference – an event that brings together political and institutional leaders, as well as representatives of the business community from Romania, Europe, and the United States, to discuss priorities related to security, stability, and the economic development of the South-Eastern European region.
