Ombudsmen issue public appeal to protect electoral process from interference

Ombudsman Ceslav Panico and Ombudsman for Children's Rights Vasile Coroi have issued a public appeal in the context of the parliamentary elections, reminding of the importance of holding free and fair elections, in accordance with democratic principles and full respect for human rights.

According to the Ombudsmen, the electoral process represents a fundamental right and a civic commitment that guarantees citizens' participation in public decision-making and influences the country's development direction.

They emphasize that fair elections involve equitable conditions for all competitors, neutrality of public authorities and debates based on ideas and solutions, not on hatred, discrimination or manipulation.

Furthermore, Panico and Coroi drew attention to issues noted in the 2024 elections, such as the abusive use of administrative resources, hate-inciting speech and the lack of substantial debates on topics of fundamental rights and freedoms.

“We make a strong call for these practices not to be repeated in the parliamentary elections on 28 September 2025. The electoral process should be protected from interference that can compromise public trust, including disinformation, manipulation, vote-buying, or the use of public institutions' images for political purposes,” they said.

They stressed that the integrity of the elections is not only the responsibility of the Central Electoral Commission but also of all state institutions, electoral competitors, media and every citizen.

On 28 September, Moldovans are expected to go to the polls to choose representatives in the parliament.
