A Book From You – A World for Me campaign launched by UNICEF and Ministry of Education and Research: book donations for kindergartens across country

Private people, companies and organizations are invited to donate books and help more children discover the joy of reading, both in kindergarten and at home. The initiative is part of A Book From You – A World for Me campaign, launched by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), which aims to complete and diversify book collections in approximately 1,400 kindergartens nationwide.

The collected books will be directed primarily to kindergartens in rural areas and communities where children have limited access to books and educational materials. By joining the campaign, each person can help expand children’s access to books and quality early education opportunities, especially in communities with limited resources.

“A child’s chances in life should not depend on how many books their family can afford or on the kindergarten they attend. Through this campaign, we aim to reduce these inequalities. By mobilizing individuals, companies, and institutions, we can create together a resource that will benefit entire generations of children, kindergarten by kindergarten,” said Deyana Kostadinova, UNICEF Representative in the Republic of Moldova.

The donated books will be used both in kindergarten and at home. Educators will integrate them into daily reading and language development activities, and children will be able to borrow them to read together with their families. Some of the books will go directly to families with limited financial resources, so that more children can enjoy reading at home.

Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun said that access to books from an early age is part of what quality education and equal opportunities for every child mean.

“In recent years, we have placed much greater emphasis on early education, because this is where the foundations are laid for a child’s entire school journey. Together with our partners, we have brought books and set up reading corners in kindergartens, and thousands of educators have been trained to use interactive reading in their teaching activities. We want to go further and ensure that every kindergarten, including those in small villages and in communities with limited resources, has enough good books for children. ‘A Book From You – A World for Me’ campaign helps us extend this effort beyond kindergarten, so that books also reach families,” noted Dan Perciun.

UNICEF data show that only 31.1% of parents and caregivers of children up to seven years old read to them regularly, and 30% of children have fewer than three books at home. Access to books is even more limited in low-income families and in rural communities.

The program promotes reading at home and in kindergarten as an essential part of children’s early education and development. So far, 1,200 kindergartens have received children’s books and set up reading corners, and 5,000 early childhood education teachers have been trained to integrate interactive reading into their daily activities with children.
