Prime Minister resigns. What follows under Constitution of the Republic of Moldova
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation today. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, when the Prime Minister resigns, the entire Government steps down. At the same time, the supreme law stipulates that in the event of the Prime Minister’s resignation, the Cabinet shall only perform the functions of managing public affairs until the members of a new Government take the oath of office.
At the same time, under the legal provisions, the President of the Republic of Moldova must launch consultations with the parliamentary factions to nominate a new candidate for the position of Prime Minister.
Subsequently, the candidate for the position of Prime Minister shall, within 15 days from nomination, request Parliament’s vote of confidence for the government’s activity program and the full list of Cabinet members. The activity program and the list of the Government are debated in a parliamentary sitting. Parliament grants its confidence to the Government with the votes of a majority of the elected deputies.
On the basis of the vote of confidence granted by Parliament, the President of the Republic of Moldova appoints the Government. The new Government exercises its powers from the day its members take the oath of office before the President of the Republic of Moldova. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation from the head of the Government today, after eight months in office.
In this context, President Maia Sandu will hold a press conference today starting at 11:00.
