Spain's National Day celebrated in Chișinău

Spain's National Day was celebrated in Chișinău through an event organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Attending the event were Spanish ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, based in Bucharest, José Antonio Hernández Pérez-Solórzano, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, Labor Minister Alexei Buzu and President of the Constitutional Court Dominica Manole.

'We celebrate the friendship and strong ties of cooperation that unite us,' the Spanish Embassy shared on social media. 'It is an honor to have the presence of Moldovan officials, as well as representatives of the diplomatic body, Moldovan institutions, and civil society. Thanks to everyone who joined us on this occasion.'

History of the Celebration

Spain's National Day, celebrated on October 12 and also known as Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad), commemorates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492, a historic event that marked the beginning of Spanish expansion. In Spain, the celebration includes military parades and is a symbol of unity and historical ties with the Spanish-speaking world.

Moldova-Spain Relations

Bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and Spain are dynamic and are based on political dialogue, support for Moldova's European path, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges. Moldovan-Spanish diplomacy was established in 1992, and cooperation takes place through a series of agreements in fields such as education, culture, justice, and internal affairs.

In education and culture, an agreement on bilingual Spanish education was signed in April 2024, which includes mutual recognition of diplomas and academic mobility. Inter-school exchanges and the participation of Spanish students in theater festivals in Moldova are also planned.

In the field of justice, cooperation was strengthened in September 2025 through the signing of a Memorandum of collaboration between the Ministries of Justice, aiming at modernizing the judicial system, combating corruption, and unifying judicial practices and the penitentiary system.

In the field of internal affairs and security, an agreement on mutual recognition of driving licenses was signed in May 2024, facilitating the mobility of Moldovan and Spanish citizens.

Economic cooperation is supported by Spanish investments, particularly through the company Unión Fenosa, and official visits by Moldovan authorities to Spain for developing relations in the agricultural sector.

Spain Supports Moldova's European Path

Spain supports Moldova's European path and promotes the reforms necessary for integration into European Union standards. In this context, in June 2022, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez became the first Prime Minister of Spain to visit Moldova, meeting with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița. In June 2023, Sánchez participated in the European Political Community Summit, held at Mimi Castle near Chișinău, highlighting Spain's continued support for our country.
