Moldovan president comments on ban imposed on unrecognized Transnistria's leader

The Russian Federation will attempt, in the coming months, to destabilize the situation in Moldova or create the perception of destabilization, in order to obstruct the country’s accession to the European Union. President Maia Sandu today made statements to this effect, when asked to comment on the five-year ban imposed on Vadim Krasnoselski, the unrecognized leader in Tiraspol, preventing him from leaving the territory of Moldova.

The head of state said that Moscow’s actions could aim to create tensions and raise questions among European Union member states regarding the situation in Moldova and its accession path.

“I can only say that, in the coming months and beyond, we will see more attempts by the Russian Federation to destabilize the situation or create the perception of destabilization in Moldova, in order to create obstacles, raise questions in the member states of the European Union and make our path toward joining the Union more difficult,” Maia Sandu said.

The president emphasized that the authorities must be prepared to face these challenges, in order to maintain peace and stability in the country and prevent the discrediting of its European path.

“Unfortunately, this is something we will see. We must be prepared and respond accordingly, first and foremost to preserve stability and peace here at home, and secondly, to prevent the discrediting of our European path,” the head of state stressed.

Vadim Krasnoselski, the unrecognized leader in Tiraspol, has been banned from leaving the territory of Moldova for a period of five years. Earlier this week, he was in Moscow, where Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded him the Order of Honour of the Russian Federation. The distinction was presented to him for his activities in the Transnistrian region.
