U.S. senators ask Meta, Google to block Russian propaganda, illegal funding before elections in Moldova

Two U.S. senators, Jeanne Shaheen and Thom Tillis, have sent official letters to Meta and Google, urging them to take urgent measures to block Russian propaganda and illegal funding targeting Moldova's electoral campaign ahead of the September 28 elections.

The American authorities are focusing on fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, internationally sanctioned, who is said to have already spent over 500,000 dollars on Facebook ads, continuing to use online platforms to influence Moldova's information space.

“We cannot be indifferent. Moldova is on the verge of joining the European Union, and its future should be decided by its citizens, not Moscow's disinformation,” the U.S. senators emphasized in their message to the tech giants.

Moldovan authorities have repeatedly warned that the Russian Federation is conducting disinformation and manipulation campaigns aimed at influencing the country's democratic processes.

The seriousness of the situation is also confirmed by international partners – the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, which believe that the Russian threat poses a direct danger to Moldova's democracy.
