Venice Commission delegation to visit Chisinau next week
Venice Commission delegation will pay a fact-collecting visit to the Republic of Moldova on 29-30 April 2025, in the context of preparing a follow-up opinion on the draft law on anti-corruption judicial system and amendments to some normative documents.
According to the parliament's communication and public relations department, the delegation will meet with MPs from the parliamentary majority and opposition, as well as representatives of the judicial system and the Prosecutor's Office.
The discussions will mainly focus on the amendment registered by MP Veronica Roșca, head of the legal committee on rules and immunities, which aims to adjust the draft law based on the received opinions and suggestions formulated during public consultations.
The amendment provides for the establishment of specialized courts to combat corruption, including a specialized Anti-Corruption College at the Chișinău Court and anti-corruption panels within the Court of Appeal Center. According to the authors, the solution would require fewer resources compared to setting up a separate structure.
Judges working in these courts will handle cases related to high-level corruption and other related offenses. They will also have the authority to conduct judicial reviews of acts issued by the National Integrity Authority in cases where substantial discrepancies are found between income and acquired wealth.
The draft law was voted on in the first reading on 30 November 2023, and the Venice Commission has already previously issued an opinion on this legislative initiative.
