PM, European Commissioner discuss European agenda, strengthening resilience of Moldova

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has had a meeting with European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib. The discussions focused on advancing Moldova in the process of joining the European Union, strengthening crisis response capacity, promoting equality and combating discrimination.

The PM emphasized that European integration represented a national project for Moldova, and that the authorities were mobilized to fulfill the commitments undertaken in the accession process: “The European integration has become the idea that unites us as a society. We are fully committed to this process and are doing everything in our power to fulfill our commitments. We want Moldova to advance based on its merits and the results achieved.”

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan also emphasized that Moldova wants to actively contribute to European security and solidarity, rather than merely benefit from EU support. In this regard, the PM highlighted the participation of Moldovan teams in European intervention missions and the experience accumulated by the country in strengthening democratic resilience and combating foreign interference.

“Moldova is joining the European Union not only to benefit, but also to contribute. Even with the limited resources we have, we are finding ways to contribute to European security and solidarity,” the prime minister said.

For her part, Commissioner Hadja Lahbib praised the progress made by Moldova, noting that the country is among the most advanced candidate states in implementing reforms and is ready for the next stages of the accession process.

In the context of the regional security situation, the sides also discussed strengthening the resilience of Moldova and the capacity of institutions to respond effectively to crisis situations. The PM emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation with the European Union in this area and strengthening mechanisms for protecting the population. The officials also discussed the support provided to Ukrainian refugees and their integration into communities.

The meeting also addressed issues related to energy vulnerability, as well as social inclusion policies, the protection of persons with disabilities and combating discrimination. Particular attention was given to preventing and combating violence against women—an issue that is among the government’s priorities.
