7 September - International Day of Clean Air for blue skies
Chisinau, 7 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- Today Moldova celebrates the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies - an action of the Environment Calendar organized in line with the resolution of the UN General Assembly of December 2019. This emphasizes the importance and urgent need to improve the quality air, to increase the awareness of the whole society regarding the importance of preserving and improving air quality, to promote the necessary actions to reduce air pollution.
Air pollution is one of the greatest threats to public health and is one of the leading preventable causes of death and disease globally. The World Health Organization warns that currently 99% of the world's population breathes polluted air, and this fact causes about 7 million deaths annually.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, pollutants emitted into the atmosphere are the cause of some of the most serious environmental problems facing humanity today, such as ocean acidification, toxic precipitation, the greenhouse effect, the destruction of the ozone layer and climate change. "Air pollution is generated, for the most part, by human activity, and in these conditions it becomes a necessity to organize the effective measures to secure the atmospheric air, which will contribute to minimizing the impact of these activities and ensure the population's "right to live in a healthy environment, ecologically safe for life and health", which is one of the fundamental human rights, provided for by the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova", said the cited source.
In the Republic of Moldova, air protection and climate change were recognized as priority areas in the National Development Strategy Moldova 2030. The objective Ensuring the fundamental right to a healthy and safe environment addresses an essential set of Sustainable Development Goals and thus builds the foundation for a more sustainable future for the country.
