Moldova's National Food Safety Agency announces three African swine fever outbreaks confirmed in two Moldovan districts

Three outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) were recorded in Moldova during  August 6-12, 2025: one in the locality of Braniste, northern Rascani district, and two in the village of Seliste, southern Leova district, according to the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA).

ANSA warns that the ASF virus spreads rapidly and there is no treatment or vaccine, which makes the prevention essential. Pig owners are urged to immediately notify veterinarians, ANSA's territorial subdivisions, or local authorities in case of animal illness, death, or discovery of wild boar carcasses.

In the context of the grain harvesting campaign, farmers are advised to avoid feeding pigs with freshly harvested grains that might be contaminated by wild boars and not to use food scraps in animal feed. The observance of minimum biosecurity rules is mandatory, in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

ANSA reminds citizens not to purchase animals without sanitary and veterinary certificates and to avoid buying pork products from unauthorized places or neighboring countries, as they will be confiscated and destroyed upon entering the country.

“People who notify authorities about the discovery of wild boar carcasses and indicate their location can receive a reward of 50 euros for each notified case. This is a high-risk situation for animals’ health, and preventive measures are the only barrier against the expansion of outbreaks,” says the National Food Safety Agency.

In Moldova, at least 11 outbreaks of African swine fever were recorded in 2025.
