Prime Minister and UNDP Representative approach cooperation priorities
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan held a meeting with Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Republic of Moldova Daniela Gasparikova. The discussions focused on cooperation priorities for the upcoming period and on the support that UNDP can provide to accelerate reforms and implement development projects in the country.
The Prime Minister appreciated the support offered by UNDP in recent years, from crisis management and reducing energy vulnerability to digital transformation and strengthening institutional capacity. Currently, UNDP is implementing 34 projects in the country, and the organization’s activities reach approximately two thirds of the communities in the Republic of Moldova.
The parties discussed expanding cooperation in areas that can support economic development and advance reforms. These include developing business infrastructure, such as creating new industrial parks, supporting local economies, and preparing projects capable of attracting investment. Another topic addressed was the digitalization of the energy sector. UNDP is already supporting a pilot program for the installation of smart meters in several localities across the country. The new systems enable automatic transmission of consumption data, billing based on actual usage, and faster identification of incidents in the grid.
In the long term, the development of smart metering will allow more efficient consumption management and integration of a larger share of renewable energy into the network. Particular attention was given to preparations for the cold season and to providing the necessary assistance to vulnerable households.
