LIVE // 14,000 tons of ammunition stored at Cobasna, gross quantity

UPDATE // A potential explosion at the ammunition depot in Cobasna, the Transnistrian region, would not cause a regional catastrophe, contrary to statements made for many years in Tiraspol and Moscow. This conclusion was reached by the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) and the Military Intelligence Agency of the Republic of Moldova, in a new report.

According to intelligence estimates, the amount of ammunition stored at the facility under the illegal control of Russian military forces has decreased in recent years to approximately 14,000 tons. At the same time, the actual mass of explosive substances is estimated at approximately 2,800 tons.

The rest of the quantity consists of metal casings, packaging, and inert components. According to the report, these data indicate that the scale of any potential threat associated with the Cobasna depot has been greatly exaggerated.

UPDATE // Currently, the Cobasna ammunition depot is believed to hold 14,000 tons of ammunition in 42 storage facilities, announced Radu Cîșleanu, AIM director.

The Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) and the Military Intelligence Agency (AIM) of the Ministry of Defence present the main findings and conclusions of the joint report “Cobasna: Separating a Myth from Reality”.

During the event, Alexandru Musteața, SIS director, and Radu Cîșleanu, AIM director will present the technical and security assessment of the Cobasna ammunition depot, including data on ammunition stockpiles, the specific features of the storage infrastructure, the identified risk scenarios, and the recommended measures for managing them.

Clarifications will also be provided regarding certain scenarios circulated in the public space about the scale and possible consequences of an incident at Cobasna depot.
