Anti-Corruption and Combating Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office to be set up in Moldova

Anti-Corruption and Combating Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office will be set up in Moldova. A draft law to this effect has been registered by a group of MPs of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) faction and is to be submitted to public consultations. PAS MP Igor Chiriac made the statement today.

According to the lawmaker, the bill stipulates that the new prosecution office will be created by merging the Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office (PA) and the Prosecution Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS).

“A group of deputies from the PAS faction registered a bill regarding the creation of the Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecution Office. The project establishes a framework law for the prosecution specialized in combating corruption and organized crime. The document aims to strengthen the structure and architecture of state institutions meant to combat political corruption, grand corruption, including organized crime, in a more efficient manner. We witnessed during the 2024 elections an unprecedented situation when criminal groups, with interference from foreign states, I refer to the Russian Federation, through malign influences, attempted to create a dangerous situation for the state,” Chiriac said.

The official noted that according to the bill, the new Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecution Office will be established, while the PCCOCS and PA will be disbanded.

“There will be a period in which Prosecutor General will nominate a person to ensure the interim leadership of the new prosecution office, with the approval of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP). Subsequently, the CSP will organize a competition to select both the chief prosecutor and the prosecutors of the newly created institution. By law, we provide CSP and the General Prosecutor's Office with mechanisms to operationalize and ensure the activity of the new prosecution. Continuity of ongoing cases will also be ensured,” said Igor Chiriac.

The bill is to be submitted to public consultations on the parliamentary platform.

Following the public consultations, all proposals and recommendations will be analyzed, after which the bill will be proposed for voting in Parliament.
