Higher budget for Prosecutor General’s Office in 2026: most funds allocated to salaries

The Prosecutor General’s Office will benefit in 2026 from a budget of 519.4 million lei, an increase of 1.45 percentage points compared to the 2025 budget. The draft budget was approved today by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP).

The draft was presented in the SCP plenary by Acting Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon. He said that most of the funds – 433.5 million lei, or about 83.5%, will be allocated for the salaries of Prosecutor’s Office employees.

“When formulating the budget proposals, the Prosecutor General’s Office took into account the expenditure limits set by the Ministry of Finance, the recommendations of the Court of Accounts, and the planned needs for 2026. We were guided by the legal provisions on remuneration in the budgetary system,” Machidon said.

For the purchase of goods and services, 37.8 million lei are planned, and for capital repairs – 10.7 million lei.

“In accordance with the technical specifications, the offices of the Prosecutor’s Office in Soroca, Criuleni, Căușeni, Ștefan Vodă, Hâncești, as well as some related garages were included in the list of facilities subject to capital and current repairs. At the same time, the office of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, including the engineering networks of the basement of the central building, is being prepared for capital repairs,” Machidon added.

The budgets of specialized institutions will also be increased: the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office will have over 57 million lei at its disposal, and the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases – 58.4 million lei.

“We note that, for the second consecutive year (2024–2025), resources have been requested to ensure the procurement of robes for prosecutors, in accordance with the model and distinctive insignia approved by the Superior Council of Prosecutors. For 2026, 3.6 million lei have been allocated for this purpose, with the start of procurement conditioned on the approval of the final model,” Machidon said.

According to the Prosecutor General, the draft budget was developed in accordance with the Law on Public Finances and Law No. 3 on the Prosecutor’s Office.

“The 2026 budget of the Prosecutor’s Office includes resources for the technical and material equipping of the system and for implementing the program for the enforcement of the state’s criminal policy,” Machidon underlined.

Thus, the budget approved for 2026 represents a significant increase compared to the previous year, intended to ensure staff remuneration, the proper functioning of the institution, and the implementation of the priorities of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to official statistics, 602 prosecutors are employed in the prosecution system of the Republic of Moldova.
