First monument dedicated to Moldovan heroes fallen in all wars inaugurated in Hungary

A monument dedicated to heroes originating from the territory of today’s Republic of Moldova, who fell in all wars, has been inaugurated in the city of Miskolc, Hungary. The monument is the first war memorial erected outside the country in memory of soldiers from the Moldovan space.

The project was carried out by the Agency for Science and Military Memory, in cooperation with the Institute and Museum of Military History under the Ministry of Defence of Hungary. The construction of the monument is based on the provisions of the Moldovan–Hungarian intergovernmental Agreement on the preservation and eternalization of the memory of soldiers and civilian victims who fell in wars, signed on 2 March 1998.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Defence of the Republic of Moldova Anatolie Nosatîi, Director of the Agency for Science and Military Memory Vitalie Ciobanu, representatives of the Ministry of Defence of Hungary, of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Budapest, as well as officials and residents of the city of Miskolc.

In his speech, Nosatîi emphasized the symbolic importance of the monument, noting that it represents more than a simple commemorative structure.

“The inauguration of this monument is not only an act of commemoration, but also a profound gesture of respect and gratitude towards those who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield. Through such initiatives, we keep alive the memory of those who paid the ultimate price for the freedom and values we cherish today,” stated the Minister of Defence.

According to the official, the event also marks a new stage in strengthening Moldovan–Hungarian cooperation in the field of military remembrance, contributing to the development of their shared historical heritage and to the promotion of a culture of commemoration.

The inauguration ceremony took place in the context of the official visit by the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Moldova to Budapest, at the invitation of his Hungarian counterpart, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky. During the visit, Nosatîi and Szalay-Bobrovniczky signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The document covers participation in activities and exchanges of experience in areas such as defence policy, human resources management, military medicine, military history, education and training.
