Moldovan head of state sends condolences to families of victims of train accident in Spain

President Maia Sandu has conveyed a message of condolences following a tragic railway accident in Spain, expressing solidarity with the families of the victims and with the Spanish people.

“I extend my condolences to the families of those affected by the tragic train collision in Spain. Our country stands with Spain, as it mourns such a painful loss,” the head of state wrote.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and other political leaders have earlier also sent messages of compassion and support to the Spanish authorities and the families hit.

A railway accident involving two high-speed trains left at least 39 people dead and 123 injured on January 18.

According to the Spanish authorities, a train operated by the company Iryo, which departed from Málaga in Andalusia (south) and was heading to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz, approximately 200 km north of Málaga, colliding with a train of the national company Renfe, that was traveling in the opposite direction on an adjacent line towards Huelva. The force of the impact between the trains, which were carrying hundreds of passengers, was such that it hurled the first two carriages of the Renfe train off the tracks.

The Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry informed that, at present, there was no official information confirming the presence of any citizens of Moldova among the victims of the railway accident. The case is being monitored by the Embassy of Moldova in the Kingdom of Spain, which is maintaining contact with local authorities to identify any potentially affected individuals.
