Moldovan Health Ministry assigns 181 young physicians to public system; health minister tells residents their professionalism to strengthen health system

Over 180 graduates of residency programmes today were assigned to public medical and sanitary institutions across Moldova.

According to the Health Ministry, the allocation aims to cover staffing needs at district, municipal and republican hospitals, in health centers, as well as in the structures of the National Public Health Agency (ANSP). The targeted specialties include cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesia and intensive care, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, pulmonology, radiology and medical imaging, neurology, laboratory medicine, gastroenterology, pathology, ophthalmology and pharmacy.

During the official opening of the assigning event, the health minister and chair of the assigning commission Emil Ceban addressed an encouraging message to the young graduates:

“I wish you great success on the professional path you are beginning today. The medical profession involves responsibility, dedication and empathy towards patients. I am confident that you will rise to the challenges and that, through your professionalism, you will contribute to the development and strengthening of Moldova’s health system.”

The health system of Moldova is facing a severe shortage of medical staff, with the most critical situation reported in family medicine. According to official data, approximately 250 family physician positions are currently vacant nationwide. In emergency medicine, 85 positions stay unfilled, and in general surgery there are 53 vacancies. The shortage also remains acute in anesthesia and intensive care, where 107 positions are vacant, as well as in radiology and medical imaging, with 77 unfilled posts.

According to data from the National Statistics Bureau, the health system of Moldova registers 12,600 doctors of all specialties and 23,687 people with secondary medical training.
