Over 100 road accidents involving cyclists recorded in Moldova since beginning of 2026 year; police urge drivers to follow safety rules

Over 100 road accidents involving cyclists occurred in the first six months of the 2026 year. As a result, three people died and 100 suffered injuries. The National Inspectorate for Public Security (INSP) has unveiled data to this effect, at the request of MOLDPRES.

Contacted by the agency, the INSP press officer Ana Chiselita stressed that the number of road accidents involving cyclists was slightly higher compared to the same period of the last year.

“Between January and June 2025, 97 accidents were recorded, resulting in five deaths and 88 injured persons. The data show that the number of accidents is increasing, as is the number of injured people. However, there is a decrease in the number of deaths,” noted Ana Chiselita.

In the context, law enforcement officers urge cyclists to strictly comply with traffic rules and road signs, in order to prevent unfortunate incidents.

“It is important to ride on bicycle lanes, and in their absence, on the right side of the roadway, as close to the edge as possible. Avoid traveling at night without reflective elements or proper lighting. Wear a helmet and visible clothing, so that you can be noticed by other road users. Do not ride under the influence of alcohol or other prohibited substances. Make sure you check carefully before changing direction and signal your intentions in advance. Respect pedestrians and give way where required by law,” emphasized Ana Chiselita.

During the warm season, the number of cyclists in traffic increases significantly. In the context, the police reiterate that observing traffic rules and adopting cautious behavior were essential for preventing accidents and reducing the number of victims.
