Several resident doctors specializing in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (AIC) attended the ESICM Intensive Care Fundamentals (ICF) course – educational program for developing core competencies in intensive care. It was organized at the Center for Simulation in Medical Training (CUSIM) of “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF).

The course was organized by “Valeriu Ghereg” Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology No. 1, in partnership with the Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology of the Republic of Moldova (SARRM) and with the support of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).

The event brought together 17 AIC resident doctors in their 2nd and 3rd years of training at “Nicolae Testemițanu” USMF. The teaching activity was carried out by a team of four ESICM-certified trainers, coordinated by university professor Serghei Șandru, who ensured a high training standard and a modern, competency-based approach.

Through interactive methods and practical scenarios, the course helped strengthen clinical decision-making and management algorithms for common and critical situations in intensive care. Over the two days, the residents practiced current approaches to the management of critically ill patients, including acute respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, as well as contemporary approaches to analgesia, sedation, and delirium management. The practical component, conducted in a simulation environment, supported the integration of theoretical knowledge into rapid, safe, and patient-centered clinical decisions.

“Organizing this course confirms the value of the long-standing collaboration between ‘Nicolae Testemițanu’ USMF, SARRM and ESICM, which creates real opportunities to align medical training in the Republic of Moldova with European standards and to strengthen the culture of patient safety in intensive care. The high level of participation and interest expressed by resident doctors reflects their motivation for professional development and encourages us to continue our efforts so that ICF becomes a regular course and, in the medium term, is systematically integrated into the training pathway of all AIC resident doctors in the Republic of Moldova,” said Șandru.

ICF is a structured educational platform dedicated to training early-career physicians in the intensive care, with a focus on the essential knowledge and clinical skills required to safely work in an intensive care unit.
