Moldova to purchase building for its diplomatic mission at EU

Moldova will purchase a building for its Diplomatic Mission at the European Union. The government today ruled to create a governmental commission for identifying and purchasing the property.

At the cabinet meeting, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi said that acquiring a building for the diplomatic mission in Brussels was necessary, in order to ensure proper working conditions for the mission’s employees, whose number is increasing.

“We are consolidating the institutional capacity of our diplomacy, in order to continue delivering benefits to our citizens in the process of European integration. Following the restructuring of the staff of Moldova’s Mission at the EU, the diplomatic staff in the Brussels mission has increased from 10 to 27 people. Presently, there are physically 22 people there, and there is no effective space left to second new staff within the total of 27. At the same time, the diplomatic missions to the EU of countries comparable in size to Moldova, both EU member states and candidate states, have about 30–40 people on staff. Therefore, the current capacity in the five offices, where 22 people are working, is beyond the limit at which they can operate in decent conditions,” said Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi at the cabinet meeting.

The official noted that identifying the new headquarters as soon as possible was necessary, in order to ensure the continuity of the diplomatic mission’s activities in Brussels.

“The creation of the governmental commission will ensure maximum transparency in the decision-making process and will guarantee a conscientious approach to the use of public funds,” added Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi.
