Moldovan PM says government's goal to have strong mayoralties, better services for citizens

The authorities’ goal is that, following the local public administration reform, we will strong mayoralties, better services that are closer to the people, as well as development in each locality, regardless of the region of the country in which it is located. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has made statements to this effect, in the context of launching consultations on the local public administration reform.

“This is a very complex and difficult reform. We have consulted with countries that have already undergone this reform. Our goal is to have strong mayoralties, better services that are closer to the people, as well as development in every locality, whether it is located in the center, north, south, east or west,” said Alexandru Munteanu.

The PM noted that the authorities encouraged voluntary amalgamation and that 400 settlements had already expressed their intention to initiate this process.

“We encourage voluntary amalgamation. More than 400 localities have already expressed their intention to start this process. For us, the central authorities, it is clear that voluntary amalgamation is the simplest and most welcome solution. We can provide support and other necessary assistance,” the prime minister said.

In late last January, the government officially announced the launch of the process of preparing the local public administration reform, as part of efforts to modernize the administration and improve the quality of public services provided to the population.

Secretary General of the Government Alexei Buzu has recently announced that the draft concept of the local public administration reform would be presented at the end of February–beginning of March. Subsequently, all technical aspects of the reform will be finalized, with the draft laws to be submitted to parliament in next autumn.
