Old Calendar Christians celebrate Dormition of the Mother of God

Old Calendar Orthodox Christians today, August 28, celebrate the Dormition of the Mother of God, known as the Great Feast of Saint Mary, one of the most important holidays in the Orthodox calendar.

The day marks the end of the two-week Fast of Saint Mary and is accompanied by more traditions. Believers bring fruits, such as grapes and plums to church, to be blessed, while young girls pick flowers which they place at icons as a sign of protection and blessing.

In more localities across Moldova, special services and parish feasts are held, and numerous believers take part in pilgrimages and religious ceremonies dedicated to the Mother of God.

The Dormition of the Mother of God is one of the important feasts for Orthodox Christians, and this day is marked by parish celebrations in many settlements of Moldova. According to data by the Public Services Agency (ASP), the name Maria is among the most widespread female first names in the country.
