Railway of Moldova state enterprise transports over 46,000 tons of export, transit goods in last August

The Railway of Moldova state enterprise (CFM) transported more than 46,500 tons of goods for export and in transit in last August. The shipments were made up mainly of agricultural products, highlighting the role of railways in Moldova’s exports and in connecting regional trade routes, according to data presented by the company and reported by MOLDPRES.

According to CFM, the largest quantity consisted of rapeseed – 10,789 tons, followed by oilseed crops – 7,526 tons, wheat – 7,428 tons and peas – 2,786 tons.

At the same time, CFM transported 18,019 tons of goods in transit.

The largest transit volume was transported along the Basarabeasca–Galati route, where 5,773 tons of lentils and 1,559 tons of rapeseed were shipped. Along the Basarabeasca–Reni route, 2,470 tons of sunflower oil and 6,031 toes of barley were transported.

Another important flow was recorded along the Mohyliv-Podilsk–Ungheni (CFR) route, through which 3,186 tons of wheat were transported.

In total, exports and transit shipments amounted to 46,548 tons of goods in last August.

CFM says that these shipments show the importance of railway infrastructure for the national economy, particularly for the agricultural sector, as well as for connecting Moldova to regional markets.

The data on transit comes amid the use of Moldova’s railway system for Ukrainian goods as well. CFM has earlier said that Ukrainian goods in transit were transported using the Ukrainian operators’ own railcars and that these shipments do not reduce the availability of CFM railcars for Moldovan farmers.

The company also noted that the CFM network had a capacity of 8–12 pairs of trains per day, while only approximately 20 per cent of this capacity is currently being used, allowing domestic and transit shipments to be carried out simultaneously.

Thus, the volume of more than 46,000 tons transported in last August shows that the railway strays an important corridor for Moldova’s agricultural exports and for regional freight transit.
