Speaker on MPs' salaries: We need to bring order to payroll system

Starting January 1, 2027, MPs will no longer receive separate payments for assistants and protocol expenses. The additional payments, totaling approximately 13,000 lei, will be included in their salaries without increasing the total allocations from the state budget. Speaker Igor Grosu made the statements today.

The Speaker explained that the changes are part of a reform of the salary system, which aims to ensure a fairer hierarchy of remuneration in the public sector, based on the responsibilities associated with each position.

“This law will bring more order to the salary hierarchy, because we currently have positions for which the remuneration is lower than for other positions, even though the level of responsibility is higher,” Igor Grosu said.

According to him, in the case of MPs, budget expenditures will not increase, as the additional payments for advisers, assistants, and protocol expenses will be included in their salaries. Transport allowances will be maintained, given the costs associated with travel.

Igor Grosu noted that the reform also seeks to eliminate informal remuneration practices involving public officials and civil servants. In this context, he referred to the period of oligarchic rule, when, according to him, some individuals were paid “in envelopes.”

“We are the only government willing to take responsibility for bringing order to this system, because over the years, especially during the oligarch’s rule, there was a practice that was extremely harmful to any state: the practice of paying public officials and some civil servants in envelopes,” the Speaker said.

At the same time, he did not rule out the possibility that such practices may continue in the current legislature, including in some opposition factions, but specified that he has no evidence to this effect.

The Speaker emphasized that the state must ensure transparent remuneration for civil servants and public officials in order to prevent situations in which people making informal payments can exert influence over them.
