Moldova wins four medals for first time since competing at Olympic Games
Chisinau, Aug 11 /MOLDPRES/- Moldova has won four medals for the first time since it has been competing at the Olympic Games with a separate delegation, twice as many as in 1996 and 2000. The entire Olympic team, led by Olympic medalists Anastasia Nichita and Sergei Tarnovschi will fly home from Paris on 12 August.
According to the relevant authorities, the silver medal won by Anastasia Nichita is the first after a 24-year break. Anastasia, who has had several injuries this year, is also the first female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympic Games.
For the first time on the podium, judoka Denis Vieru and Adil Osmanov won two bronze medals. For the second Olympics in a row, Sergei Tarnovschi took third place.
Weightlifter Marin Robu also came very close to a bronze medal, but suffered a controversial refereeing decision.
Moldova with four medals ranks 72nd among 206 countries.
Paris hosted the Olympics after a break of 100 years and broke the record for tickets sold of some 9.4 million. The next Summer Olympics will be held in 2028 in Los Angeles.
