VIDEO // Government invests in sports development: Over 86 million lei allocated in recent years for competition prizes
The government has doubled the monthly scholarships and increased the rewards for top-performing athletes. Over 86 million lei have been allocated in recent years for prizes at sports competitions. For 2025 alone, over 47 million lei are planned for athlete scholarships. The figures were presented by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who emphasized that investments in this field will continue.
The Prime Minister said that in the past four years, our athletes have brought home 1957 medals from European, world championships, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Champions like Serghei Tarnovschi, Daniela Cociu, Maria Olărașu, and many other athletes make us proud by raising the tricolor on the highest international podiums. In the past 4 years, our athletes have brought home 1957 medals from European championships, world championships, the Olympic, and Paralympic Games. We are pleased that these results are due, in part, to the government’s investments in sports,” he said.
Dorin Recean mentioned that over 86 million lei have been allocated in recent years for prizes at sports competitions, and for 2025 more than 47 million lei are planned for athlete scholarships. Additionally, the Prime Minister assured that investments in this field will continue.
“Moldova grows through the performance of our people. We believe in their strength and will continue to invest in the potential of every child in Moldova, whether they dream of becoming a doctor, teacher, or Olympic champion,” concluded Dorin Recean.
Canoeist Sergei Tarnovschi, who has brought multiple medals to the Republic of Moldova, including at the Olympic Games, says that significant progress has been made in recent years in supporting sports and top-performing athletes. “Athletes' salaries have been increased, sports funding has grown, and more sports events are organized,” said Tarnovschi.
“In recent years, many things have changed in the field of sports. Salaries have increased. This motivates us to become better and strive for better results,” mentioned canoeist Maria Olărașu.
According to data presented by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, sports investments have increased by 80 percent in recent years, from 381 million lei to 686 million lei. Therefore, if in 2021 around 8 million lei were allocated for the monthly scholarships of top-performing athletes, in 2024, over 33 million lei have been allocated. If in 2020, 2.7 million lei were allocated for rewards for top-performing athletes (66 athletes and 57 coaches), in 2024, the government has allocated almost 31 million lei for 488 athletes and 171 coaches.
