The Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) today was honored by a visit of two world-renowned personalities — Professor Hiroshi Amano from Nagoya University in Japan, Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics (2014), and Professor James Rothman from Yale University in the USA, Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine (2013).

The two scientists met representatives of the scientific community of Moldova, as well as pupils, students and young researchers. At the event, Professor Hiroshi Amano delivered a public lecture titled, Let's Work Together to Build a Sustainable World, in which he emphasized the importance of international collaboration in research, in order to protect the environment and develop green technologies.

The ceremony continued with the presentation of the Honorary Member insignia of ASM to Professor Amano and the awarding of the Dimitrie Cantemir Medal to Professor Rothman, in recognition of their exceptional scientific contributions.

This is the first time the two Nobel laureates have met in Moldova, with their visit taking place on a single day. Professor Rothman will participate in the International Conference on Nanotechnologies and Biomedical Engineering, as well as in meetings with researchers from Falesti and Telenesti.

Professor Hiroshi Amano received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014, alongside Isamu Akasaki and Shuji Nakamura, for the development of blue light-emitting diodes, which revolutionized modern lighting technologies. Professor James Rothman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2013, together with Randy Schekman and Thomas Südhof, for discovering the mechanisms that regulate vesicle traffic in living cells.
